When a child is deprived of basic relational sustenance other resources must be employed. Emory entered his little world like all creatures, reliant on others for nourishment and protection from danger. At first, these were provided, if barely and with great effort. Yet his most persistent yearning was for the delicious warmth of connection, the corporeal fulfillment of being deeply felt and treasured. This form of nourishment was ill afforded. The cupboard close too bare. As compensatory fortune would have it, Emory’s interior world was abundant with life. His inner cupboard was never empty.
This gifted and intensely creative individual had managed to build a life for himself and to succeed in ways that were far beyond the confined territory of his early life. As his latest ambitious goal was achieved Emory expected a strong steadying confidence to follow. But the the opposite occurred When he came to see me the terra firma beneath him was spongey and porous. The holes were growing big enough for him to fall through.
